Innovative Method: Scaffold-Free Facade Protection for Deteriorating Buildings
The protection of deteriorating building facades is becoming increasingly important in Germany. According to the report "Sanierungsbedarf im Gebäudebestand" from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (December 2014), about half of the approximately 19 million residential buildings will require renovation within the next 20 years. Public buildings and monuments also show significant investment backlogs, with many facades exhibiting serious defects that necessitate securement.
Importance of Facade Safety
Time and cost play a crucial role for property owners. Deteriorating facades pose risks to individuals and property. According to legal provisions (§ 836 BGB), property owners are liable for damages resulting from the collapse of a building or falling parts. Both property and personal damage can quickly lead to multimillion euro compensation claims. Therefore, it is essential to restore safety as quickly as possible for dilapidated buildings.
Innovative Facade Protection Technique
Securing a building with a facade protection net is a relatively new and innovative technique that largely eliminates the need for complex, time-consuming, and costly scaffolding. This facade protection net is installed by industrial climbers, who descend from the building's roof using rope access technology (RAT). Depending on the extent of the damage, either coarse or fine mesh nets can be deployed in combination to ensure maximum safety. This flexible net construction effectively protects the surrounding area and pedestrians from falling heavy building parts, facade panels, and glass fragments resulting from spontaneous breakage of single-pane safety glass.
Simon Neudert, an industrial climbing expert, aims to establish this effective method of building and facade protection both nationally and internationally. Together with the meeco Group, active in the renewable energy sector, he is developing this business area through his newly founded company, meeco Industrial Services GmbH. "Facade protection nets could potentially replace the labor-intensive securing of buildings with scaffolding almost entirely in the future," explains Simon Neudert.
Advantages of the Facade Protection Net System
The rapid, cost-effective, and flexible installation of the nets means that street closures are not necessary, allowing buildings to be used normally without downtime. The nets are highly transparent, ensuring that residents and workers are not disturbed by large scaffolding that blocks light. Additionally, there is no scaffolding rental fee. With the net system, maximum safety is guaranteed. We offer a two-year warranty upon annual maintenance, allowing property owners ample time to plan and prepare for their building renovations.
